·         Mental Disorders and Adolescent Offenders: How Should the Juvenile Justice System Respond?

Thursday November 6, 9:00-12:00 at the Fresno campus
Auditorium
RSVP to Nancy Rocha at (559) 253-2275 or Email.

Responding to adolescent offenders with mental disorders has become one of the most pressing and controversial problems for juvenile justice in the 21st century.  This session first identifies the prevalence of mental disorders among youth entering the juvenile justice system, as well as its relevance for youths’ welfare and public safety.   Then it reviews a project that has succeeded in improving the identification of youths’ disorders upon admission to juvenile justice programs.   Finally, the discussion focuses on what the juvenile justice system should (and should not) be expected to do in response to youths’ mental health problems, with special attention to emergency responses, forensic assessment services, and community-based treatment through diversion or aftercare.

Thursday Nov. 6, 1:00-4:00 in Fresno at the Ramada Inn

This is a presentation for the professional community. The Alliant community is invited.

RSVP to Nancy Rocha at (550) 253-2275 or Email.

·         Juveniles’ Competence to Stand Trial

Friday November 7, 1:00-4:30 at the Los Angeles campus
Auditorium
RSVP to Pam Skewes at (626) 270-3291 or Email.

The question of juveniles’ competence to stand trial began to be raised in juvenile courts only a little more than a decade ago.  Legal and clinical uncertainties about the concept abound when applied to adolescents in juvenile court cases.   This session identifies current legal questions, as well as cases that are beginning to address them (e.g., Timothy J. v. Sacramento County).   Then research is reviewed regarding differences between adolescents and adults--in brain development, psychosocial development, and in actual performance on trial competency tasks--that are relevant to consider in both policy and practice.  Finally, the session offers a discussion of current “best practices” in forensic clinical assessment of youths’ competence to stand trial.
